☆ Glasses
Sweden's eyes started to worsen during the Kalmar union and around the start of the War of Liberation, he finally got glasses. If you ask him, he will tell you that the maltreatment from Denmark's hands is to blame for his bad eyes, but then again he would blame Denmark for the weather. What is definite is that his eyes started to worsen enough for him to need glasses towards the end of the union.

☆ Vowels are for losers or Sweden's speech pattern

To explain his way of talking, we need to go back in time a bit. To 2008, one year after Sweden bought his son on the internet when the first fan translations of Hetalia came around. Sweden, who in Japanese speaks Tohoku accent, received a type of grunt speak in English. He did, however, not sp'k l'k' th's - that is what some fans made of it. His speech was absolutely legible: He dropped a few vowels, but the much more striking part of his speech was simply that there wasn't much at all. Sweden really only says the most necessary things, and another strip showed us that he tends to think a lot about pretty much every single word - phrasing, tone, if it is appropriate or not and fits the mood...

Basically, it all comes down to Sweden being shy. If you think about every single word that you say, you won't say much; and most people tend to mumble when they are unsure about their words - it just has become so much of a habit now that he cannot even stop mumbling when he is absolutely sure and confident about his words.

☆ Wife
aka Finland.

Sweden for the first time realized that he was interested in males (as well?) during the Viking times, and while he doesn't realize that, a part of the terminology stems from there. While two males could be together, the submissive partner basically lost a part of his manliness; to a warrior, ie to the male elite, being accused of having been the receiving end of gay sex (NOT having been with another male) was an ultimate insult that he had to react to with a challenge over life and death. To those that were not warriors (and Sweden would not have considered Finland one back then, not based on how strong the other nation was but on what he thought of his social standing) that would not have been an issue, though. That did not mean that Sweden wanted to get the other male laid or anything, but those ideas definitely had an influence on how he came to terms with feeling attracted to other males.

Then Finland got old enough for Sweden to start to think of him as his future spouse (this happened during the middle of the Kalmar Union). In a time when marriage was not about two equals, the husband-wife idea still worked despite religion and societal norms having changed. Sweden was the stronger nation, the one who owned the house and everyonething in it, who had pretty much every right to do with Finland as he pleased. Except for Finland not being male, which Sweden had decided was not important because very few nations are female, that was quite exactly the description of a marriage.

To Sweden, calling Finland his wife thus meant two things: Expressing that they belonged together and nobody would tear them apart easily; expressing that Finland was his; and expressing that he would protect Finland and that nobody else should ever dare touching him, because the bond between a wife and her his husband was the strongest and most symbolic tie between two people that he could think of.
